Bicycle Industry

Sir, —As a National Government supporter of many years’ standing, I find it very disturbing to read what is happening to the bolsteringup of the “well-made New Zealand” bicycle industry. The facts have been well published in “The Press." It seems that when the manufacturers started they would “go it alone” without subsidy from the taxpayers. Recently a large wealthy firm has come into the business and is going to get a protected monopoly by a shareholding interest in the original! firm, and the combined firm will get a complete monopoly, a thumping protection against all overseas competition, and the user pays. Britain desperately needs this business—any export business—at present. We need all the good will we can get from them—under butter quotas, etc. We could save overseas funds by excluding junk and luxuries, but spare the humble “bike.” —Yours, etc., RETYRED.
