From February to May, committees, producers and actors associated with the British Drama League read hundreds of one-act plays in preparation for the league’s drama festivals.

"Unfortunately,” says the league’s latest newsletter, “this annual search for a festival play is often guided only by the number of men and women in the group and not by any basic principles concerning the worth of the play.” The newsletter says there are certain standards which can be applied to all plays and which should be of paramount importance. “Above all,” it says, “choose a play that carries conviction.” The newsletter also advises against plays in which people are easily type-cast, or in which events are incredible. The league favours plays with rhythmic dialogue and a worth-while object. The next area festival to be held by the league in Christchurch will begin on July 26. The adjudicator will be Miss Frona King, of Nelson.
