SYDNEY HOLDUP
Armed Bandits Under Bed
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. June 20. Two armed bandits hid under a bed in a Sydney hotel last night and held up the publican and his wife after closing time. They escaped with more than £2OOO. stolen from a safe, and rings worth £6OO. The hold-up was at the Lord Robert’s Hotel at the corner of Stanley and Riley streets.
The publican, Mr John Hickey, said he was cleaning the public bar at 11 p.m. when he heard his wife scream in their bedroom on the first floor. “My wife had opened the safe in our bedroom when two men rolled from under the bed. One said ‘This is a stick-up.’ “He pointed a gun at my wife and grabbed the money she was putting in the safe,” he said. The other man ransacked the safe and took money put in there the day before. He also forced off the rings Mrs Hickey was wearing and grabbed a couple of other rings from a jewel box. “I ran upstairs and ran into the two men on the landing. One jabbed a gun in my ribs, so I didn’t have much chance of arguing” said Mr Hickey. The men ran downstairs and out through the front door.
