Strong Ski Lift

Skiers can take heart from the certainty that the Coronet Peak chair lift will not break while they are on it. A similar lift at Alyeska, a Pomagalski, survived the 1964 Alaskan earthquake without any ill effects although much of Alaska was wTecked by this major disaster, an 8.6 tremor. A 14-foot snow slide came all the way down to the second tower, but no damage was caused and 48 hours after the earthquake the lift was running again. During the earthquake a 27,0001 b cement counterweight jumped up and down as if it was a matchbox and yet the counterweight tower suffered no damage at all.
