Doubles Was Best Of Badminton
Avonside, Railway 11, Christchurch I and Knox were the winning teams in the fourth round of the Canterbury A grade badminton inter - club matches. Easily the most exciting match of the round was the men’s doubles between D. Reid and T. Bradbury and B. Wylie and R. Blunt, won by Wylie and Blunt, 15-13, in the third set. This was a match of changing fortunes, with Wylie’s and Blunt’s better smashing around the net prevailing in the closing stages. One of the closest matches was the women's singles be : tween Miss N. Baty and Mrs M. Wylie. Miss Baty raced away to a lead of 10-6 in the first set and looked to be in complete control, but then made the mistake of changing to a clearing game, upon which Mrs Wylie thrives. Mrs Wylie finally ran out the winner after some exciting rallies, 12-11, 12-11. Miss R. Waites, the province’s most promising girl, made her debut for the season after being out because of an injured leg, but found Miss B. Gormack in good form and went down, 5-11, 2-11. B. Crofts, a Division I representative this season, was hard pressed by R. Miller, who played his best match for some seasons. Miller took the first comfortably, 15-9, was unlucky to lose the second, 11-15, and for a time, when he led 8-5 in the third, looked as
though he was going to beat his more experienced opponent. But Crofts’s better court craft finally gave him victory. Results:— Christchurch I 6, Christchurch II 2 D. B. Reid beat B.
