Flockhart Picked For Hurdles At Wanganui

“The Press’’ Special Service WELLINGTON. Flockhart again has a chance to show his liking for Wanganui when he contests the Century Hurdles there today. In the last two years Flockhart has come out on top in the Century Hurdles and he has an excellent chance of making it a hat-trick. There are only six in this ■ year’s race, but this should not prevent it being a spectacular contest.

Flockhart looked good when i he won over country at WavI erley. He could do no better than third to Cinnaman at Foxton and his next and last | start was on the flat at Mas- ; terton last week. Paromac. with 9-3. will be a I strong rival for Flockhart, j Last winter, in a limited numj ber of jumping starts, he showed great promise and he I won at Hastings and Trentham. He was good on the ! flat too. being in open class. Great Second | Last week Paromac, considering the little racing he has I had this winter, ran a great i second in the Rotorua Jumpers’ Flat, and his work at Awapuni with Action Packed lon Thursday was impressive. Montgomery is a great hurd- ■ ler, but he has had only one start .since his Century Hurdles third a year ago. That was last week at Masterton when he contested a maiden flat race. He ran quite well for a jumper, galloping strongly in the middle of the field and holding his place to the end. The top-weight. Tilly Light, was second to runaway Captain Rebel in the Waikato Hurdles. He was beaten by 10 lengths, but it was a good enough race considering the holding ground prevented him from galloping as freely as usual. Double Fancy The Thomas Duncan Challenge Cup is the first leg of the T.A.B double. Action Packed is picked for this. He might still need a race, but he is not far below his peak. He ran attractively over one mile at Te Rapa, and was up fast to be prominent on the turn last week at Rotorua.

Palanga is a hardy type which weighed-in three times at Te Rapa. The top-weight. Bright Coral, is a form runner. He should race well, but 8-13 in a large and quite strong field could have him struggling. Advocacy won this race in 1962 and again in 1963. but was beaten last year. His form lately is not good. but he worked well on Thursday at Wanganui. A light-weight with a good chance would be High Society. He spoiled his chance by pulling hard behind the leaders at Masterton and weakened to a fair seventh. Dhuran looks good for the second leg, the P. A. O’Neill Handicap He has won three races at Wanganui and is a high-class winter sprinter. At

| Masterton, at his last start, ; he had little of the luck in the running, and his jockey could . not ride him out. Even so. j he came a close fourth.

I Dhuran looked in faultless condition that day, and in the same order and with better luck should prove the winner. ' Equality, which receives 151 b from Dhuran, and Tara’s Pride, which concedes Dhuran 31b. will probably be the bestbacked of the others. The weight in each case could be the deciding factor. It might be difficult for Tara’s Pride to give weight to Dhuran, specially if the ground is soft, and I Equality has probably improved enough with last week’s run at Rotorua to make it difficult for ! Dhuran to give him so much weight. Good Prospects ' The two last-start winners. Count Carmel and Donald Din i nie are reasonable prospects. I and two improvers are That’s It and David Jeff. Both were close up at Masterton after bad ' runs, and That’s It. in particu- : lar. lost a good winning chance there. | Selections: 11.15 a.m.—Trial Plate: Big Dipper, Marie Dresler, Nasa Fair. 11.55 a.m.—Stayers* Hack Handicap: Magog, Lightning Chief, That’s For Sure. 12.40 p.m. Century Hurdles: Flockhart, Paromac. 1.15 p.m.—June Hack Hurdles: Saturnian, Tarzan, Shah Jahan. 2 p.m.—Sir Thomas Duncan Handicap: Action Packed, Patanga, Bright Coral. 2.45 p.m.—Grandstand Hack Steeplechase: Crown Prince, My Momento, The Bandit. 3.30 p.m.—P.
