LABOUR ON WHARVES
10-Hour Day Criticised I f.v.Z. Press Association) • AUCKLAND, June 4. i Between 3500 and 5000 manhours were lost each week on I the Auckland waterfront because of the waterside workers’ new 10-hour day, the manager of the Auckland Waterfront Industry Commission, Captain C. V. Stanich, said last night. Half the wharf work stopped at 5 p.m. because there was no continuation of shore labour and equipment, he told the Auckland Socialist Forum. “The introduction of the 10-hour day was rather ill-i timed,” he said. The president of the Auckland Waterside Workers’; Union (Mr E. Isbey) said that with the reduction of meal and other breaks under the 10-hour system, more was achieved than under the old system.
