Sharp Rise In Royalties
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 3, The amount paid to overseas companies by way of loyalties or licensing agreements by New Zealand manufacturers had risen sharply in recent years to £2,204,000 in 1964, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) said in Parliament. Mr Marshall said £1.482.000 had been paid in 1962 and £1.750,000 in 1963. “Against this (the 1964 figure) must be set off the
value of knowledge and techniques gained by New Zealand,” he said. Asked if the payment of royalties was justifiable, Mr Marshall said the policy “in relation to the payment of royalties is operated by the Reserve Bank . . . where the payment of royalties is involved the merits of the pay-1
ment are considered by the! Reserve Bank.” Asked if the amount of! royalties affected the granting of import licences, MiMarshall said this was taken! into account when considering amounts of payment. Production had increased {j as a result of the payment of,, I royalties, he said.
