ESHKOL CHOSEN

Candidacy In Israel (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TEL AVIV, June 4. The contest between the Prime Minister Mr Levi Eshkol) and his predecessor, Mr David Ben Gurion, for leadership of the Mapai Labour Party was settled last night. ■ Mr Eshkol was nominated as candidate for the Premiership in the next General Elections. Members of the party’s central committee cast 179 votes for Mr Eshkol and 103 for Mr Ben Gurion.

The struggle was a result of a suggestion that the party elect Mr Ben Gurion as the candidate then name Mr Eshkol for the Premiership afterwards. Although Mr Eshkol agreed, Mr Ben Gurion ruled out the suggestion. Last night’s vote, which showed that more than a third of the committee would prefer to see Mr Ben Gurion at the helm again, was a shock for Eshkol supporters. The possibility of a split in the party and the formation of a new party headed by Mr Ben Gurion has been hanging over the Mapai party for several months.
