SNELL TO RUN MILE
New Record Predicted (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LOS ANGELES, June 4. An international lineup, including six world record-holders in field and track events and 28 Tokyo Olympic medallists, will compete in the Compton invitation meeting tonight. The New Zealand world mile record-holder, P. G. Snell, will be challenged by R. Schul, holder of the world two-mile record, and J. Odlozil, of Czechoslovakia, a silver medallist at Tokyo. The New Zealander, whose mile record is 3min 54.1 sec. will also be racing against H. B. Elliott’s 1500 metre record time, for which he will be officially timed. However, Snell said: “1 don’t think it can be done during a mile race. The extra 120 yards to complete the mile make a big difference and I’ll be trying to win the race.” N. I. Scott, of New Zealand, who is competing in the 5000 metres, predicted his countryman would break the 1500 metre record.
“Snell is stronger now than ever before.” Scott said. “Recent work-outs have boosted his confidence, and when he gets confident, he’s a hard man to beat.”
