Squash Title Won At 3rd Attempt
Defeated in two previous finals. D R. Preston showed that he is without doubt Canterbury's top squash rackets player this’ season by winning the closed championship from D. J. Triggs. 9-6. 9-1. 9-2, last evening. The final took only 30 minutes hut in that time both players were at full speed and at no stage did either let up. Triggs was unlucky not to win more points. He was more venturesome in his play than Preston and his half-volley drives and drops were a delight to watch. Preston appeared to have de cided on a safety first policy as he concentrated on putting the hall high down the backhand wall waiting for Triggs to make errors and only occasionally forcing the play. The first game saw Preston go into a commanding lead, helped bv a crop of errors from Triggs. At S-l down Triggs came back into the picture with four fine winners and he recovered to S-s before Preston played a rare winner and took the game at Plav went on for three minutes in the second game before Triggs won the first point. the fitter Preston at 1-1 for several minutes. Triggs allowed himself to try for winners from too far back in the court. The veteran. H. S. Gair. used ail his guile to defeat an ex treme'v fast B. Hamilton in the B grade final. Hamilton played brilliantly in the first two games and when lead'ng 5-0 in the third he looked a "slitter"' for the title.
