Motz 51, But N.Z. Heavily Beaten
[From R. T. BRITTENDEN, N Z.P.A. Special Correspondent J BRADFORD, June 4. New Zealand held out for 90 minutes against Yorkshire this morning, losing its last five wickets for the addition of 83 runs, and with a second innings total of 208, lost to the county by an innings and 77 runs.
I he ball was turning and lifting violently and the only batsmen to prosper, even briefly, were B. W. Yuile and R. C. Motz.
In an extraordinary display of powerful hitting, Motz reached his 50 in 36 minutes and was undefeated at the end. Up hit five sixes, three off Illingworth and two from Close. New Zealand resumed its innings in pleasant sunshine but there was not much satisfaction in the thought that ’ with five men out the side : was still 160 runs short of’ making Yorkshire bat again. Began With Spin Close started straight away with off-spin at each end. He and Illingworth bowled to Jarvis and Pollard and neither had a fieldsman in the deep. Pollard and Jarvis saw out the first 20 minutes with some batting of hard labour until a ball from Illingworth popped wickedly and Pollard was easily caught by Trueman at; short leg. A few minutes later Jarvis I swept, but a lifting ball took the top edge and Boycott held a well-judged catch at square leg. Defiant Stand Taylor swished and missed; fairly regularly before he was dismissed, but Motz and Yuile. in a defiant stand, timed the ball better and each hit a six. They added 26 in 15 minutes but there the stand ended, Yuile being bowled playing late at Illingworth. Violent Attack Ward gallantly decided to bat and while he defended stoutly, Motz violently attacked the bowling. The last wicket added 40 in 19 hectic minutes. Motz hit four more sixes, two of them from successive balls by Close, and his final six was a tremendous hit which very nearly cleared the ground. This gallant last-ditch dis-j play ended with Ward playing a defensive stroke at 1 Illingworth and the ball trick-■ ling on to the stumps.
