TROTTING King’s Cord, Flying Bonnie Form Runners

King’s Cord, in the Allenton. Handicap, and the Flying Bonnie—Set Sail bracket, in the Tinwald Handicap, will form a popular combination for the on-course double on the first day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting tomorrow.

King’s Cord, a member of J. H. Docherty’s Kaikoura team, has been a most consistent trotter in recent months. He finished third behind Raparee and Codex at Addington on May 22 at his most recent start. In that race he looked a possible winner until he broke at the furlong. King’s Cord stays well and he should not be troubled by a softish track. He is by Ripcord from Queen’s Brigade, both of which are members of families with fine records in winter conditions.

Melissa and Waiau Toa, both on 36 yards, are two other capable trotters and they could be too solid for most of the horses on the limit A number of promising, but as yet unreliable horses are on the front. Among the best prospects in this group may be Global King, Boxella and Wayren. while the pick of the remainder behind the limit could be Milford Nurse and Karen Brigade. Flying Bonnie gained her (first win at the Kurow meeting last week when she raced away from a useful field to win by 12 lengths. If she repeats that run she will be the hardest to -beat in the First Tinwald Handicap. Set Sail, another member of D. G. Jones’s team, also won at the Kurow meeting last week. She, too. is in fine form at present and the rise in class in this field should not trouble her. Fanlight was particularly I impressive when he won at Washdyke at his first race start, especialy as he was brought almost to a standstill with less than three furlongs

to run. He could be a serious threat to the favourite bracket on that run. Cindy, a member of D. J. Townley’s successful Tinwald team, finished a useful second to Chief View at the Kurow meeting last week. She. too. looks to be close to winning form and could do well in this race. Dryden Smoke, Rainford Boy, Native Tryax. Strathallan and Winning Song are others entitled to consideration in an open field. The .T.A.B. double will be run on the Nicol! Handicap and the Stewards’ Handicap. Fair weather is forecast and the track will be soft. ON COURSE DOUBLE
