Another Batting Collapse By N.Z.

[From R. T BRITTENDEN. N.Z.P A. Special Correspondent ! BRADFORD, June 3. New Zealand collapsed dramatically on the second morning of its match with Yorkshire, losing seven wickets for 82 at lunch. With the atmosphere suiting swing, and on a pitch from which the ball lifted and turned markedly, if rather slowly, New Zealand gave a pitiful display.

Only the captain, Reid, who hit hard but sensibly in making 41, achieved anything positive. Later, however, Yuile and Pollard put their heads down and added 23 for the eighth wicket before lunch without; being separated. New Zealand set out of its long chase for runs on a I beautifully sunny morning but cricket’s hoary old joke about the good people of Yorkshire stoking up their fires when the enemy were batting looked like being realised in a sorry sort of way. In Bradford this morning there was a spectacular fire in a large wool warehouse and the pall of smoke from it was beginning to reach the ground as Dowling and Congdon came out to open New Zealand's innings. Yorkshire’s Party Reid today is celebrating his thirty-seventh birthday but it was Yorkshire which had the party. In a heavy atmosphere Trueman and Nicholson swung the ball violently and in Trueman’s third over a beautiful lifting out-swinger was edged byDowling for Sharpe, in the slips, to take a fine catch above his right shoulder. In the same over Sinclair was defeated but he was a little unlucky to be given out lbw to a ball which was also rising sharply. Then Nicholson struck at the other end. He bowled a slower one which Congdon tried to drive and he was taken by the wicket-keeper, Binks. So in half an hour New

Zealand had lost three batsmen for four runs. Reid hooked Nicholson for four and Morgan played a few solid shots but at 18 he turned Nicholson straight to Hampshire at short square leg. Reid Two Fours Reid turned Trueman off his toes with fine timing for four and on-drove him for another boundary. After an hour both opening bowlers were rested and were replaced by the slow lefthander Wilson and the offspinner Illingworth. Reid hit Illingworth hard and high for four, but Jarvis, pushing outside his off stump, was easily taken by Close at short leg—an indication of the turn Illingworth was achieving. Half the team was out for 33 as Pollard joined Reid. Reid, determined to attack but doing nothing rash, swung Wilson fine for four, then when one was thrown up to him he hit Wilson straight ifor six, followed by a four with a pulled drive. Wilson came off and Close, replacing him, immediately claimed Reid’s wicket. The New Zealand captain hit a good forcing shot very hard, but Wilson, 25 yards from the bat at square leg, flung himself forwards and sideways to bring off a magnificent catch. Taylor Caught After two fine off drives Taylor tried to hit Close over the sight-screen, but was taken by Boycott 30 yards behind the bowler. The seventh wicket fell at 59, but Pollard and Yuile safely saw New Zealand to lunch without further loss.
