CHURCHES, SPORTS AGREE ON POLICY
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 3. Representatives of the church and national sporting bodies decided at a meeting today that it was “valuable” to maintain sporting relationships with countries where racial prejudice was prevalent. The meeting, convened by the National Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church, passed a resolution declaring an “open door policy would improve human relationships.”
The aim of the meeting was to formulate an attitude towards the Springboks’ forthcoming Rugby tour of New Zealand. A similar meeting was held early in April, but no decision was reached.
The meeting agreed that: National teams should be selected without regard to race, “in accordance with Christian and sporting principles,” and Church and sporting bodies should work for the embodiment of Christian principles in the field of international sport. Representatives of sports bodies agreed to ask their organisations how such prin-
cip’es should be put into practice. The Bishop of Wellington (the Rt. Rev. H. W. Baines) said the suggestions would be made directly to church leaders.
