Sir, —I telephoned the M.E.D. this morning to have an electrical fault repaired, and was told that the repair men had left and they had no way of getting in touch with one, no matter how urgent. Private electrical firms have a car with radio and can direct a man to a necessary repair, but not the M.E.D. In modern parlance, “How like Hickville can you be?”—Yours, etc., NO HEAT. May 31, 1965. [The general manager of the Municipal Electricity Department (Mr J. P. Shelley) replies: “The M.E.D. makes very considerable use of radio communication, and all fault vehicles are so fitted, together with a proportion of repair men’s vehicles. For this purpose, however, radio has not proved very successful, as the repair men spend mpst of their time in houses, where they cannot hear the radio call..]
