INVERCARGILL, June 1. Oyster openers and eaters from as far north as Christchurch will test their skill against Southland's best at an oyster industry show in the Civic Theatre on July 3. So far about six teams from Invercargill and Bluff and one each from Dunedin and Christchurch have entered, but the organisers hope another two-man team —an opener and an eater—from Christchurch and Dunedin will enter. At stake will be a world record. At the competition last year, Mr J. Burke, who holds the world oyster opening record of 1719 oysters in an hour, opened 646 in half an tiour. His team-mate, C. Thompson ate 180 oysters in 10 minutes. Teams compete for a shield and openers for a challenge cup and cash orizes of £lO, £7 and £s.j Waters get a trophy
The show is being organised by the Bluff subbranch of the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society. Last year the competition was held in Bluff but because seating was limited and many people had to be turned away the competition was brought to Invercargill this year. Exciting Era “To use a classic phrase of a British Prime Minister, you ’never had it so good,’” the Secretary of Defence (Mr J. K. Hunn) told airmen at Wigram yesterday. The Air Force was entering an exciting and satisfying era of modernisation, he said. “The Cl3O Hercules are already here, the Orions are soon to follow and the Canberras will be giving way to the latest combat planes in a few years time,” said Mr Hunn.
