UNEMPLOYMENT HALVED
Buoyant Labour Market The total of unemployed persons in Christchurch this month was less than half that for the same month last year, said the acting superintendent of the Department of Labour (Mr A. B. Tuck). There were 47 persons unemployed this month, while in May last year the figure stood at 97. This month’s total was made up of 42 unemployed males, including 27 on unemployment benefit, and five females, three being on unemployment benefit. The reasons for the marked reduction of unemployed could not be given precisely said Mr Tuck. The department had not had inquiries from seasonal workers, which indicated that they were finding employment themselves. The buoyant labour market, he said, appled to females as well as to males.
