TROTTING SHERIDAN JUSTIFIES SUPPORT AT KUROW

“The Press" Special Service DUNEDINA warm favourite after wins at Gore and Forbury Park, Sheridan won his third race on end when he led over the last six furlongs of the Kurow Cup at Oamaru on Saturday, and in the end he scored by two lengths and a half without the whip being laid on him.

Sheridan began safely, losing only a little ground, but he was on the rails about four places back for the first half-mile. His driver, D. J. Townley moved him out passing the post with a mile and a half to run, secured a run up behind Filet Mignon which, although three wide, took him up to the leaders beginning the last round, and after that had complete control.

Tuarangi Chief rushed up nearing the five furlongs, briefly challenged for the lead and then accepted a trail behind Sheridan, which was tooving freely. . The field became strung out racing to the straight entrance, where Don Caesar was moving up to Tuarangi Chief, and best of the others were Next Day, Friendly Tom and Trudy Helen. Don Caesar tried hard but could not get near the winner, and in the end had only a head to spare from Tuarangi Chief. Next Day was two lengths away fourth, and then came Friendly Tom, Trudy Helen, Rothesay and Waltz Away. Gay Gordon swung sideways at the start and lost about half a furlong. He was not seriously tried after that. Won Well

Capably handled by M. Holmes, Lucky Meadow won the Otematata Handicap, the second leg of the double, by two lengths, leading over the last two furlongs, and hanging on well under a hard drive.

The hot favourite, Fielder, refused to go away, and lost all chance at the start. Fielder was at short odds on the double, but the Sheridan —Lucky Meadow combination paid £66 Is for £l. As well as Fielder, Countess Ada, Hindu Star, Brigitte Bardot, Sky, and Meadowmac

made mistakes at the start. Bar None and Lucky Meadow showed out after the start, but Lucky Meadow became hemmed in a little behind Bar None, which led into the straight with a round to go. A little further on Lucky Meadow was clear, and he followed Bourbon Lad when that horse went to the front half a mile from home. A little further on Holmes sent Lucky Meadow clear, and he ran to the straight hotly pursued by Waitaki Smoke, Emily, Calm Autumn, Bourbon Lad and Hal Special. Close to home Raven Song burst through along the rails to gain second placing and Hal Special was a good third, two lengths and a quarter ahead of Meadowmac, which made up a lot of ground. Then came Calm Autumn and Bourbon Lad.

Led Finishers Queensway, whose latest form had been nothing to enthuse over, came up with a particularly fine performance to win the Johnny Globe Stakes, beating the wellsupported Hazard and Humphrey. Lusty Lad was next after forcing most of the pace until superceded by Humphrey, which then led to the turn.

At this stage, Queensway was poised for a challenge, which came shortly after, and she quickly went ahead to score by six lengths. Hazard, which had been slow away, gradually improved, and finished on but did not look likely to catch the winner. Humphrey weakened in the final stages, but kept out Lusty Lad by half a length. Roydon Robin, slow away, and well out of his ground until the straight was reached, was next three parts of a length back. Solomon was sixth. He was slow to get going.

Although there were nine races, the meeting, the first totalisator meeting run by the Kurow Trotting Club, went off with little delay and the weather conditions were perfect.
