Obituary

REV. D. HEALY The Rev. Daniel Healy, parish priest of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Lyttelton, died on Friday evening. He was 66. Father Healy was born in Kerry, Ireland, and studied for the priesthood at St.Brcndan’s College, Kilkenny. He was ordained in 1922, and came to New Zealand in 1923. His first appointment was to the staff of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Christchurch, and then he became assistant priest at Grcyrnouth in 1931 and at Hokitika in 1935. Father Healy was parish priest at Kumara, Ross, Sumner, New Brighton, and Pleasant Point before he went to Lyttelton in 1958. There he was port chaplain. Recently he had been supervising the arrangements for the celebration of the centenary of the Lyttelton church. The Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) will celebrate Solemn Requiem Mass for Father Healy at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow. Varied Weather The week-end weather in Christchurch was varied. Yesterday was cold and overcast, with occasional drizzle and light rain. The maximum temperature was 51 degrees, recorded at Harewood at 1 p.m. and a moderate southwesterly blew throughout the day. Saturday, however, was the second warmest day of the month, a maximum temperature of 65 degrees being recorded at 3 p.m. at the Botanic Gardens, and 62 degrees at Harewood. The highest temperature—7o degrees—was recorded on May 6.

Mr A. L. Poole has been reappointed, and Mr N. F. Barber appointed, to the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
