Three Sheep Farms
THE Lands and Survey Department expects to settle three sheep farms in the Hakataramea valley in the southern part of the province in about four years time. A little more than a year ago the department took over 4210 acres towards the head of the valley from the estate of W. T. Smith. It is known as the Moorland Farm Settlement. The country is relatively flat by the river and rises to a rolling terrace. It is comparatively easy country and except for stream gorges the bulk of it could be cultivated. At the time the property was acquired almost 800 acres had been grassed
and something more than 3000 acres was still in native tussock.
The aim is to subdivide the block into three sheep farms which will each carry about 1500 ewes and replacements with the possibility of catch crops of grass, clover and lucerne seed.
Two houses have been built and another is being built. | Access roading has been done; by the county and electricity has been put in, and the pro--vision of a water supply is I being investigated. It is anticipated that there will be a i piped water supply for each ! unit.
