Attractive Cargo Ship
The Albyn line's 7790-ton Thistledhu, now discharging London cargo at Lyttelton, is a nine-year-old cargo ship. Her attractive appearance is enhanced by her long clear deck, particularly aft, and the low midship structure surmounted by a tall bridge. At present under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., the Thistledhue is one of three ships owned by the Albyn line. She is commanded by Captain L. H. Williams. Under charter to the M.A.N.Z. line for more than three and a half years, the Thistledhu was renamed Kildare and under this name made regular visits to Lyttelton.
During her present voyage she has discharged at Apia, Suva, Lautoka. Wellington, and Nelson. She will visit Dunedin before loading nickel ore at Noumea under charter to the Nippon Yusen Kaisha line of Japan. The ship has a cruising speed of 13J knots and a crew of 38, including a woman. She is Mrs Nancy Kitwood, of North Shields, the chief engineer’s wife. Mrs
Kitwood has already visited Australia, South Africa, Japan, Singapore, and Mozambique. She has been a justice of the peace for 12 years and has given long service as a member of the Tynemouth Borough Council. She is also a member of three hospital boards and is a deputy company civil defence officer. Recently, she passed an examination in first-aid instruction.
