Debrett Ruling On Royal Name
(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
LONDON, May 28.
Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, and his brothers and sisters have the surname MountbattenWindsor, says the 1965 edition of Debrett’s Peerage.
An article in the authoritative 3200-page volume said they would use this name on their marriage certificates. A 1960 announcement had raised the possibility that the Royal childrens’ name would be Windsor and that descendants who did not have the rank of “royal highnesses" would use the hyphenated surname of MountbattenWindsor. The article also settled arguments over whether
Prince Charles “comes of age” at 18 or 21. He is always of age.
The new edition pointed out as a missed opportunity that the late Sir Winston Churchill was not granted heraldic augmentations of honour given to two of his ancestors. The banner carried at his funeral contained these augmentations granted to his namesake, Sir Winston Churchill by Charles II and to the Duke of Marlborough by Queen Anne. None was granted to Sir Winston Churchill personally, though King George VI offered a dukedom, which was declined.
“One would have thought that the Sir Winston Churchill of our time merited even more than this heraldic honour,” the new edition said. New Peerages The new Debrett, which weighs 6 jib, list 36 new peerages. For probably the first time since the Wars of the Roses, when the succession to the English throne was in dispute, the first 25 in the order of succession are British subjects.
