LONDON, May 28.

The higher fertility rate of immigrants will help to boost Britain’s population to over 74m by the year 2000, according to an official population forecast published today.

The report was in a Government puublication, Economic Trends. It estimated that the population would rise from 54.2 m last year to 61.4 m in 1980 and to 74.4 m by the turn of the century. It was assumed that about 15.000 men and 5000 women would immigrate into Britain each year. Average fertility had risen “fairly sharply,” and families would continue getting bigser, it was estimated.

“The fertility of migrants is likely to be greater than that of the indigenous population,” the article said.
