Waiau Bridge
Sir, —According to the records given to the Cheviot Historical Society by Mr H. Leaman, the Waiau bridge on the Main North road was completed and opened on March 31, 1911. Mr Leaman drove the first vehicle, his ferry cart over with the Hon. Mr McKenzie, Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., Mr T. Stevenson (county chairman), Mr Ell, M.P., and one other. In September. 1912, the first train crossed this bridge, making it a combined rail and road one. The trains left Christchurch at 9 a.m., arriving at Parnassus at 1 p.m., and passengers then went on by a big car driven by Mr Don Errickson to Kaikoura, arriving roughly at 5.30 p.m. From Kaikoura to Blenheim the horse coaches were owned by Mr E. Bell and from Blenheim to Nelson by Newman Bros. It was not until the motor buses started that Newmans came further south.—Yours, etc., MEMBER. CHEVIOT HISTORICAL SOCIETY. May 25, 1965.
Appeal Supported.—Lyttelton Rotarians yesterday raised £75 for the Cholmondeley Home at Governor’s Bay.
