Milk Deliveries

Sir,—-On Friday morning our milkman did not deliver our milk until 10 o’clock. As the milk is often delivered

after 9 a.m. we would like to ask what happens to the milk of those people whose work starts at 9 a.m. Does it sit in their milk boxes all day? The Health Department is always advising us to take our milk inside, yet how can we when we are at work? The milk is poor enough without the sun on it all day. Would it not be possible for the milk to be delivered at a time when people are at home—before eight in the morning or after five at night? We are told that the milk is substandard owing to a prevalence of Friesian cattle in the herds. What, if anything, is being done about this? We also understand that the new pint bottle is to become the only bottle available. If this is so, this is a retrograde step, as it involves a lot of work to those people, such as we, who live in a back section and drink large quantities of milk.—Yours, etc., BRUSH.

May 17, 1965. [The secretary of the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board (Mr C. S. Bowie) says: “The board’s by-laws permit the morning delivery of milk until 9.30 a.m. during the winter months. Any complaint of late deliveries should be referred to the board’s office for investigation. Representations made by the board regarding milk quality have been given publicity in local newspapers. Action to remedy sub-stand-ard supplies is a matter for town milk producer organisations at present until September, 1965. After that date the Department of Health has stated it will prosecute offenders. The board has no confirmation regarding the correspondent’s final remarks.”]
