Cholmondeley Home

The Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home at Governor’s Bay has provided relief in emergencies to families in Christchurch and further afield for 40 years. Today, the few men and women who are the guardians of the home on behalf of the community make their annual appeal to a wider public for funds which are essential to maintaining a valuable service. The home costs about £6OOO a year to run. With this modest sum and a small staff it can accommodate up to 30 children who, because of some disruption in their families, must be found a temporary home. The sudden illness or death of a mother presents many families with problems which cannot be solved without the kind of assistance the Cholmondeley Home can give. It offers temporary care, schooling, companionship, and recreation for children in such emergencies, without notice, with a minimum of formalities, and with the expectation of no more payment than a family can reasonably afford. This timely aid, always available, costs far more than the income derived from boarding fees, grants from charitable trusts, and the 10s a week for each child paid by the Child Welfare Division. To meet the deficit, the committee of citizens who volunteer to support the home look to the generosity of the public. About 350 citizens, business firms, and women’s organisations subscribe regularly to the annual cost of the Cholmondeley Home. Today, other citizens are asked to make their contribution to a home.
