Gunners Smile
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 27. At Papakura, where speculation has been rife since the 16th Field Regiment was mentioned as the most likely unit to contribute a combat force to Vietnam, gunners listened to Mr Holyoake’s announcement, on the radio. Today, after the anannouncement, Major P. W. F. Joplin, second in command of the regiment and its senior regular officer, called the gunners together and gave the words of the Prime Minister’s announcement.
“Smiles broke out all round,” said a member of the unit. “It was easy to see that everyone thought the 16th would be the unit called upon.”
