Commercial Vehicle Owners To Get Key Tag

Next month when commercial motor • vehicles are registered owners will receive a kit containing, in addition to two permanent number plates, a key ring and tag with a leaflet from the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society. The plan initiated by the society and made possible by the co-operation of others who realise the importance of the work being done, was similar to that of last year when car owners, as distinct from commercial vehicle owners, received permanent number plates, the secretary of the society (Mr R G. Mathews) said yesterday. The aim of the scheme was to bring the society and the invaluable work it did for such children to the notice of the public, and to provide for motor-vehicle owners a service which would encourage them to support the society, he said.

In the year since the key tag system was introduced the society had been receiving between 30 and 40 lost keys each week. “Donations received when lost keys have been returned to owners have exceeded £5OO for the year, but we would like to see this figure raised considerably,” he said. Mr Mathews said that one set of keys came back to the society from Britain. “How they got there we shall never know, but the society was able to send them back to the owner in New Zealand.” About 160,000 vehicles will receive number plates this year and each will also receive a key tag which will have stamped on it the vehicle’s plate number.
