Training School
(W Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 27. The Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) hopes a training school for fishermen can be established before the end of this year. “We have to get one under way smartly,” he said in Auckland yesterday. The school is being discussed by the Fishing Industry Board, the Marine Department, and representatives of the fishing industry. Courses would initially be limited to those already employed in the fisheries industry, and not opened to completely untrained boys, said Mr Scott. There would be instruction for apprentices on the use of
fishing gear and navigation, and practical lessons at sea. Qualified fishermen would have refresher courses in new techniques and equipment. Mr Scott was unable to estimate the cost of the scheme. But, he said, there were two or three proposals, each “quite feasible.” The cost would include a training vessel equipped with the most modern fishing aids. Mr Scott said the site had not yet been determined, though there had been two or three offers of buildings and locations. He said he believed the school could be established sooner by extending the Marine Department navigation schools at Wellington or Auckland.
