Price Cuts Likely For Some Lines

I By

Our Grocery Reporter!

The sugar price drop, although expected some time this year, came as a surprise to the grocery trade. The change should soon bring another spate of price alterations to other lines.

Already, icing sugar has dropped in price and other lines carrying a high concentration of sugar will no doubt decrease in price. Some of these lines are coffee essence, biscuits, confectionery, preserved ginger, crystallised and glace cherries, cordials and jam. This year’s fruit crop has already been canned and a further price cut is unlikely.

South African Peanuts. — Prices for South African peanuts have risen sharply by £l5 a ton. Two shipments are expected, the first some time in August and the second about November. The peanut market has been firming, affecting the price of edible oils, and today the price of peanut oil is much higher than others.

American Rice.— Further shipping delays to American longgrain rice have meant that it is unlikely that any will arrive before the end of the import licensing period, importers must find another source of supply quickly. Australia, where shortgrain rise is plentiful, is probably the only alternative market.

Bran.— Vi-Bran. which has been off the market for some time is being manufactured again by D. H. Brown and Son. It will seM in an attractive lib carton, and will retail at Is lid.

Sauerkraut. — Sauerkraut which was to be available later this year, has been found to be uneconomical. and will now not be sold.

Liquid Shampoo.— Supersoft liquid shampoo will be back on the market soon, according to the distributors. Import control has affected supplies, but stocks are now to hand and will be distributed soon. Retail price will be 8d a sachet.

Eggs.— This is the time of year when egg prices go up. Medium grade eggs have risen 3d a dozen and wiM sell in cartons at 4s 7d.

Dried Fruits. — When higher prices for Australian dried vine fruits were announced recently not all grades of currants and sultanas were available. However. latest advice is that threecrown currants and four-crown sultanas are now available.

Dates. — Dates are now being repacked in Auckland and marketed throughout the country. Attractively packed in 12-ounce cartons, the dates are stoneless and pasteurised. Under the Persian Garden brand the dates will sell for 2s lOd a carton.
