13 Named For Rugby Trials
(By
Our Rugby Reporter.)
The Canterbury selectors (Messrs R. H. Dufi and M. J. Dixon) have relied on experienced players in making 13 nominations for the South Island All Black trials which will be held at Timaru on June 15.
The only new nomination for South Island trials is E. Veal. It is somewhat unfortunate the selectors did not consider nominating younger and promising players, such as T. Mehrtens, R. J. Vivian, A. G. Steel, W. D. Cottrell and A. J. Wyllie, particularly in view of the selection of a Junior All Black team to play the Springboks this year. Most surprising, perhaps, is that Cottrell, who was chosen recently as one of the five promising players in the “Rugby Almanack of New Zealand” has not been nominated. The nominations are:
Backs: W. F. McCormick, W. M. Birtwistle, D. A. Arnold, R
C. Moreton, B. A. Watt, L. J Davis.
Forwards: J. M. Le Llevre, E. Veal, J. N. Creighton, D. J. Graham, M. R. Dunne, A. J. Hopkinson, and R. M. Wainohu. The nominations for New Zealand Maoris selection are:— Backs: G. J. Waterreus, R. Wards, W. Rewai, L. S. Taiaroa, K. King. Forwards: Wainohu, R. Tuhuru. and H. Stuart. Other Nominations Nominations from other unions for South Island trials are:— South Canterbury.— Forwards: N.
