VOTING BY NEGROES

Senate Passes Bill

(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

WASHINGTON, May 27.

The United States Senate has passed a bill to guarantee voting rights to all Americans regardless of race or colour. The vote was 77 to 19 after five weeks of debate in which Southern senators sought to block the measure.

The bill was proposed by President Johnson after racial trouble in Alabama when police used tear gas and clubs to break up demonstrations by Negroes demanding voting rights. The bill suspends literacytests and sets up machinery under which Federal officials can enrol Negroes on voters’ lists. The states affected are Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana, and certain counties in North Carolina and Virginia. The Senate bill now goes to the House of Representatives, where a similar measure has been approved by the judiciary committee. Action in the House is expected next month.
