BOMBS IN QUEBEC
Separatists Riot
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MONTREAL, May 26. Thousands of demonstrators calling for separation of French-oriented Quebec Province from Canada stormed through city streets last night, setting fires and destroying property. About 130 persons were arrested. A small zoo and a small theatre in Lafontaine Park, in the centre of the city, were set afire by the mobs and a Molotov cocktail was hurled at police. Earlier, a bomb blast knocked out a front door of an office building to begin the day of protests against Victoria Day, a national holiday honouring the reign of Queen Victoria. The holiday traditionally is celebrated with orderly firecracker demonstrations and emphasises Canada’s close relationship with Britain. Today, however, separatist groups used the occasion to dramatise their demand that Quebec secede from Canada. The maurading bands smashed shop windows in the city's main business district, set bonfires in rubbish tins and ripped fire boxes off their posts.
