AGENT FOR AIRCRAFT
Record Flighi Recalled "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, May 26. Mr J. L. Whiteman, who established a record for a solo flight across the Tasman in a war-surplus Mustang fighter 12 years ago, plans to set up an agency at Hamilton for an American topdressing aircraft. Mr Whiteman flew his aircraft Rebel from Sydney to Whenuapai in three hours 31 minutes in July, 1953, and not long afterwards crash-landed a Ryan aircraft safely on Takapuna Beach. For the last three years he has been crop-spraying in the Caribbean and South America. In about three weeks he hopes to set up an agency for a 650-horsepower aircraft which can carry 300 gallons of spray or 1J tons of fertiliser. Mr Whiteman was born in Christchurch and educated at King’s School, Remuera, and at Christ’s College.
