N.Z. EXPORT EFFORTS
More Vigour Urged
The Government should adopt a much more vigorous policy in the development of overseas markets “and with the determination and tenacity necessary as if the United Kingdom was already an E.E.C. member,” the Canter-bury-Westland divisional committee of the National Party decided yesterday. It urged the Government to engage Qualified marketing experts, create new trade posts, staff them with vigorous sales and marketingminded people “and not with veteran politicians or career public servants With little or no sales experience or ability,” establish a trade organisation in the Pacific islands, and make particular efforts to sell processed food abroad. The meeting also decided that the Government should be asked to hold a referendum before the next General Election on extended or staggered drinking hours. The committee wants the Government Tourist Bureau to be drastically overhauled “in view of the often inadequate service they give the overseas visitor,” with a view to encouraging the greater development of private enterprise in that field. It decided, too, that the Government should be asked to confer with shipping interests regarding the building of a roll-on, roll-off passenger and cargo ship for the Syd-ney-New Zealand run.
