RACING Hastings Horses Win Masterton Double

“The Preu” Special Service

MASTERTON.

Pinocchio and Princess Taiaria, both trained in Hawke’s Bay, and ridden by Hastings jockeys, won the T.A.B. double at the Masterton Racing Club’s winter meeting yesterday.

Pinocchio was moderately well supported, but Princess Taiaria was an outsider and the double dividend was £659 14s for £l.

Well back early in the Betts Memorial Handicap, Pinocchio came with a fine late run and, joining Foxy Boy and Fleeting Moment close to the post, won by three-quarters of a length from Fleeting Moment, with a head to Foxy Boy. The . favourite and pacemaker, Jen Hai, weakened slightly to fourth, followed by Funny Story and Tax Evader. Princess Taiaria was always close up in the Stewards’ Handicap and led at the furlong. She looked in danger when Careen challenged, but C. H. Mackie kept her going to beat Careen by a length and score his second win of the day. Toureg, finishing well, deadheated with Careen for second, just ahead of Dhuran. There was little between the next eight horses, headed by Alaska, finishing well, and Thats It. Lei, the favourite, was next.

The Bren Langford Memorial Steeplechase was won attractively by Amber Wine, another Hawke’s Bay horse. He was ridden by C. P. Dixon who has only recently resumed as a jockey. Amber Wine led for the last mile and beat the favourite, Mireusonta. by three lengths. They were clear of Crown Prince. The only others to finish were Teneriffe and Vane.

The on-course double, won by Tarzan and Watchet, paid £7B 16s for £l.

The weather was fine and mild and the track was in good order, but with the sting out.

There was a good attendance, larger than for most Saturday meetings, and the

on-course totalisator handled £44,040, an increase of £3119 on last year’s winter meeting which was held on a Saturday.

JEN HAI LEADS Jen Hai and Conspirator made the early running in the Betts Memorial Handicap. High Society, Tax Evader. Goldtone and Foxy Boy were in line next, then Kurrajong. High Disdain. El Ganador. Fleeting Moment, Funny Story, Fascinate ichecked at the start). Sir Torre, Top Lad, Pinocchio, and Sir Blue.

Jen Hai was just clear along the back. At the half mile he led Conspirator. Goldtone and Kurrajong. together, then High Society (pulling on the inner). El Ganador. Tax Evador. Robin Adair. Foxy Boy, High Disdain, 1 Funny Story. Fleeting Moment,

Sir Torre. Pinocchio. Top Lad and Sir Blue.

There was not much change amongst the leaders on the turn. A furlong out Jen Hai was still in front, but Kurrajong came out to challenge and Foxy Boy and Fleeting Moment joined in. It looked between Foxy Boy and Fleeting Moment, but Pinocchio came up and won by three-quarters of a length. Fleeting Moment was second and there was a head to Foxy Boy. Jen Hai was fourth, followed by Funny Story (running on), then Tax Evader, High Society, High Disdain, Sir Torre. Ei Ganador, and Fascinate. Sir Blue was last, where he had been most of the way. SLOW AWAY Lei was slowest away in the Steward's Handicap and Arbelle was at once pulled hack to the rear. Pipe Dream reached the lead in a few strides from Monetary. Princess Taiaria, Lady Mataara, Lei. running up. Careen, Kawera, Dhuran, Gold Ruth. Toureg. and Summer Flight. The last two were Arbelle and At the half-mile it was Pipe Dream by a short margin from Monetary, Princess Taiaria, Lady Mataara, Lei. Careen, and Kawera, then a tight bunch in which Summer Flight and Dhuran were prominent. There was no change among the leaders on the turn, except that That's It was becoming more prominent. Princess Taiaria led at the furlong, where Careen issued the most likely challenge. Careen could soon do no better, and Princess Taiaria beat her by a length. Toureg ran on well to dead-heat for second. Dhuran also made ground for fourth, shading Alaska, Thats It Lei. David Jeff, and Summer Flight which had little between them. Dowdex. Arbelle and Howe Good were not far away, then Monetary. Kawera, Gold Ruth, and Lady Mataara. Pipe Dream was last.
