Dream-Kitchen Winner “Still Overwhelmed”

Many women dream about the modern appliances and labour*saving devices they would like to have in their kitchens. Yesterday a dream kitchen became a reality for Mrs Noeline Govan, of Waimate.

She was presented with: a gleaming new stove, sink unit, waste* disposal unit, a dishwasher, a refrigeratordeep freeze unit, a clothes drier, a twintub washing machine, a vacuum cleaner, a shampoo - polisher, a steam iron, and a cheque for £lOO.

These were her prizes for winning the nation-wide Maggi Dream Kitchen Soups and Sauces contest, in which there were 41,000 entries. Mrs Govan was told she had won on Monday. At a function in her honour in Christchurch yesterday, she said she was still overwhelmed. “I haven’t been down to earth since Monday,” she admitted, gazing at the array of appliances worth some £650.

With her cheque, and the television set she had received for winning an early round in the contest, the total value of Mrs Govan’s win was about £9OO.

Entrants trying for this grand final prize had had to decide what soup to serve with a number of dishes, fill in a word chart, and complete the last line of a supplied rhyme. Yesterday Mrs Govan had not even started to think what changes she would make in her kitchen to accommodate

her prizes—only that she was very glad that it is a large one.

Mr J. R. Humphrey, Christchurch manager of Nestles of New Zealand, made the pre-

sentation to Mrs Govan. He congratulated her for winning a contest in which there had been tens of thousands of entries, and hoped that she would spend many happy hours in her dream kitchen. “It must be similar to having 10 lovely birthdays all in one,” said Mr Humphrey, who had been introduced by Mr W. G. W. Rix, managing director of Hay’s. Mr T. Johnson,

retail operations manager for 1.G.A., was also present, as well as other members of grocery organisations.

Also in the audience were Mr H. H. Govan, and a number of the couple’s friends

who had travelled from Waimate for the occasion. "With a five-star cook, and

now all these appliances, 1 shall have to watch my figure,” said Mr Govan. Both he and the couple’s family of four—two boys aged 16 and 15, and girls aged 12 and six —share a tremendous pride in Mrs Govan’s achievement. Mr Govan is a refrigeration engineer, and the family has lived in Waimate for seven years. One hundred of the 800 con-

solation prizes offered in the contest came to Canterbury, including the two won by Mrs Govan.
