VIETNAM APPEAL
Housewives Back F.O.L.
“We appeal to all women and women’s organisations to express support on one vital Issue: No New Zealand troops for Vietnam,” says a statement released yesterday by the Canterbury Housewives’ Union policy on Vietnam.
“We feel that the best interests of the New Zealand people will not be served in becoming involved in a civil war in South-east Asia. We find we cannot agree with the Prime Minister’s statement that Vietnam is our ‘first line of defence,’ against communist aggression, particularly as Burma, Pakistan, and, indeed, the rest of the IndoChina peninsula do not regard it as their ‘last line of defence.’
“Although the Government Junior Whip (Mr Allen) has stated that if the Government commits New Zealand troops to Vietnam it would only be a token force, in our opinion it would be sufficient to condemn New Zealand as an aggressor In the eyes of South-east Asia.”
