Serov Expelled From Party
IN Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MOSCOW, May 25. The former Russian security chief. General Ivan Serov, has been expelled from the Communist Party, informed sources said today. The grounds for what may be the final act in the disgrace of the once-powerful secret police chief were not disclosed.
The 60-year-old Serov was deputy Chief of the Ministry for State Security from 1941 to 1953 under the notorious Lavrenti Beria. who was executed in 1953. charged with plotting to seize supreme power. General Serov succeeded Beria as chairman of the State Committee on Security in 1954, a post he held until 1958, when he was appointed a deputy chief of the armed forces.
He was the last professional policeman to hold the security post.
