Whites Demonstrate In Klan Territory
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BOGALUSA (Louisiana), May 25. About 500 angry whites, fighting any move toward desegregation, last night milled around a bonfire rally in a city park after ripping away the park’s gates.
The city ordered two allwhite parks closed last week after about 100 Negroes, fielding a test picnic, were attacked by whites. Other whites pressed for a recall election aimed at ousting Mayor Jesse Cutler jun„
who announced on Sunday that the city’s illegal segregation laws will be repealed. Yesterday the Mayor said the laws would not be repealed immediately. Negro leaders expressed some willingness to go along with the delay.
However, they said, they would hold an occasional demonstration to ensure city officials did not forget the importance of the current crisis. Negroes make up about 35 per cent of Bogalusa’s 23,000 residents, who live in an area the Ku Klux Klan claims as its own.
