PLUMBING AT HOME

‘Do-it-Yourself Opposed

"Do-it-yourself” sanitary plumbing, which will be authorised by legislation *rom September 1, would be difficult to administer and inspect, and there could be an increased risk to health from any unsanitary work, sr.id Mr P. J. McWilliam, the chief engineer, reporting to the Christchurch Drainage Board.

He suggested that the hoard, as the governing body for the parts of counties in its district, should ask the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) to gazette suspension of the appropriate part of the act.

On Christchurch city and Riccarton borough, Mr McWilliam said there was no provision for a governing body. He proposed that the Minister be advised that the board regulated sanitary plumbing in both areas and considered “do-it-yourself” plumbing should not be allowed there without the board's approval. Mr McWilliam’s report was referred to a special committee.
