CHILDREN’S HOME
Cholmondeley Appeal Day
Sixty-seven children who for one reason or another were deprived of parental care during December and January were cared for in the Cholmondeiey Memorial Children’s Home, which holds its annual street appeal on Friday. The home plays a special role in the community during the summer holiday period when problems of child care arise. Mothers, taken ill suddenly, often find that friends and relatives who would normally help are away, and the fathers are faced with caring single-handed for motherless children. . Some mothers are unable to cope with a large family in a broken home.
The object of the home is the care of children in circumstances where the mother is ill or run down or a parent has deserted, during bereavement or in distress of some kind—or simply when children need convalescence or a change of environment. Not Endowed
The home is administered by a voluntary committee elected annually by subscribing members. It is not a church home or endowed in any way.
The home is in a five acre and a half property at Governor’s Bay and has its own school and Education Department teacher. It accommodates 14 boys in the three to 10 age group, and 14 girls in the three to 12 age group. The usual length of stay, depending on circumstances, is four to six weeks.
W.E.A. Grant—The Lyttelton Borough Council has granted £2 2s to the Canterbury W.E.A.
