Sectional Prize-Giving At Technical Institute

Building and commercial students of tbe Oiristchurch Technical Institute on Monday evening received prizes for 1964 at a sectional ceremony. Mr R. Simmonds, president of the Canterbury division of the New Zealand Institute of Management, told the students that the Dominion had achieved almost perfect conditions of incubation for personal and economic development. There was an umbrella of social security, freedom from want, almost free education, a stable economy, freedom from war and pestilence, and a great measure of import protection. Yet, in the last 20 years, its most notable marks in the world were made by Snell, Halberg, and nine Melbourne Cup winners.

Mr Simmonds said New Zealanders were dissipating their energies on a host of sectional arguments when they should be making the country great. Nations beaten in the last war were now “beating us hollow” in productivity. If New Zealand were not shaken up, somebody else would take over.
