1965 Ronson Awards
The 1965 Ronson awards at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art were presented recently. The awards, presented annually since 1958, are cash grants intended to help promising students tide over what is sometimes a difficult gap between leaving the academy and getting a job in the theatre.
QIZZIE ON BROADWAY Dizzie Gillespie, a great veteran of modern jazz, will make his Broadway debut in the musical “Lookin’ For the Man” playing the part of an elderly jazz musician. BEATLES DEMAND
The Columbia Broadcasting System has received 50,000 requests for tickets to the Ed Sullivan Show on the August date on which the Beatles will be guests. The studio holds 700. CHANGES NEEDED Illness caused some difficulties as Glyndebourne where the Festival opened last week. The conductor Vittorio Gui was delayed by his wife’s illness so Myer Fredman conducted “II matrimonio segreto” for him. Oscar Czerwenka had to withdraw from the role of Baron Ochs in “Der Rosenkavalier” to undergo surgery and was replaced by Manfred Jungwirth. Miss Edith Mathis, who is singing the role of Sophie, is expecting a baby and will be replaced in August by Miss Liselotte Hammes.
