18 Months’ Gaol

WELLINGTON, May 2'.
A sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr Justice Hutchison in the Supreme Court today on William Raymond Avison, aged 37. a taxi-driver, when he appeared for sentence on a charge of unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage.
His Honour said the prisoner was a man of good character and a good family man but the offence was serious.
The probation officer’s report had been favourable and His Honour said he felt justified in making the sentence less than it might otherwise have been.
Lyttelton Lions. The newly - formed Lyttelton Lions’ Club will hold its inaugral charter dinner in Lyttelton on June 12.
