FINANCE OF HOSTELS
Policy Statement Expected
Finance for students’ hostels, which has been concerning all New Zealand universities for several years, may be the subject of an official announcement soon.
This hint was given by the principal of Lincoln College (Dr. M. M. Burns) yesterday. “It is not unlikely that a statement on halls of residence will be made in the near future,” he said. The Lincoln College Council had received a letter from the chairman of the University Grants Committee (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) “reiterating” that the only policy on hostels at present was the subsidy arrangement now operating. However the matter was being discussed with the Minister of Education. Earlier, the Lincoln College Council had sought an urgent statement of policy from Dr. Llewellyn. His reply, similar to the one received yesterday, was considered unsatisfactory so the cjpncil wrote again.
