Secondary School Enrolments

There will be places for all pupils who seek enrolment in secondary schools of Christchurch next year but all may not get into the school of their first choice. No new schools will open, so the situation is stable, but the Technical High School will merge with the Christchurch West High School to become Hagley High School.

The following official statement on enrolment arrangements was issued yesterday with the concurrence of all principals and boards of governors:—

“Mr M. Hewitson, the district senior inspector of secondary schools, recently convened a meeting of the principals of the Christchurch State secondary schools at which procedure for enrolment for 1966 was discussed. At that meeing the principals

agreed, subject to the later concurrence of their boards of governors which has now been received in all cases, that applications for enrolment in 1966 will be received by Thursday, July 1, 1965. Prospectuses and enrolment forms will be available to city schools in the week commencing Monday, May 31, 1965. “As a guide to parents the following statement on enrolments in the Christchurch State secondary schools for 1966 is supplied by the principals of all schools: “Parents of pupils seeking enrolment at State secondary schools next year are recommended to study the courses offering at secondary schools and make application for enrolment at the school of their

choice. This application must be made on the school’s application form and should reach the school concerned by July 1, 1965. Hagley High School

“Enrolments will not be accepted at Christchurch Technical High School as this school will amalgamate next year with Christchurch West High School to become Hagley High School. AH the courses offered at the Christchurch Technical High School will still be available at Hagley High School. These courses include building, engineering, home science and commerce. Therefore, parents of pupils who would have sought enrolment at Christchurch Technical High School should enrol

their pupils at Christchurch West High School. “Though it is likely that some pupils will not be accommodated at the school applied for, parents can be assured that there will be sufficient places for all in the Christchurch secondary schools. “Some time will be needed after July 1 for co-ordination of enrolments within the conditions set down by each board for the admission of pupils. On the afternoon of Tuesday, July 20, notices will be sent to all parents who have applied informing them whether their application has been successful or not.

“If for any reason an application for enrolment at a school has not been accepted parents will then have the opportunity of making application at another school. A list of schools where there are still vacancies will be supplied. This second application must be made by Monday, August 2.”
