“Challenge To Heathcote”

“The recent decision by the Halswell County Council to participate in the financing of the town hall project, having previously rejected it, is extremely heartening, and will be much appreciated by the other local bodies in the metropolitan area,” said Cr. H. G. Hay, chairman of the Christchurch City Council's town hall committee, last night. “The fact that this decision was reached without further representations being made to the county was most encouraging, and showed a public spiritedness on the part of the county councillors which I hope will act as a challenge to their neighbours in Heathcote,” he said. “The Heathcote County Council is now the only local body in the metropolitan area which has not agreed to join the town hall scheme. I feel confident that this latest decision by Halswell will inspire the Heathcote County Council to reconsider its previous decisions and join as soon as it is able,” said Cr Hay.
