Patrols To Stop Half-Time Chang es

Th* increasing practice of junior toams replacing players at half-time will be stopped the executive of the Canterbury Basketball Association decided at Its meeting. Referees, selectors and executive members will patrol ail junior games for the next two weeks and although first offenders may get off with a caution, further offences after a warning will incur a penalty. "Next Saturday is the final date for payment of annual subscriptions. which this year have been coming in very slowly," reported the treasurer. Mrs J. Lee. Teams which fail to pay subscriptions by Saturday, lose the discount, and have to pay an additional 10s per team. Faced with heavy expenses In staging the New Zealand tournament in August this year, in addition to the lighting of eight courts for night basketball, the executive decided to hold a raffle to meet the additional commitments. "Delegates to the annual meeting had been unanimous that clubs would be happy to give this additional support?' said the president. Miss E. Yates, and she had no doubt that every club could be relied upon to enthusiastically back this fund-raising project. Thirty teams had taken part In the opening round of night basketball, and an additional four teams had entered for the second night reported the convener, Miss H. Yates. "The holding of the handicap tournament during school holidays had been most successful and had to a marked degree cut down on the number of teams defaulting their games through player shortage, said Miss E. Yates.

Enthusiasm among lower grade teams for the handicap tournament was still high, said the draw steward. Miss P. Gallagher. but she doubted that senior teams derived much enjoyment or benefit from this form of game.

The players’ delegates. Mrs L larr and Miss N. White, urged that some change be made for senior teams. After further dis cusslon it was agreed that in future years, senior teams take part in a special competition for their grade, and that the senior reserve, second and third grade teams compete for the senior handicap tournament trophy The following selectors were appointed to act as manager and coach of their respective representative teams: Seniors. Miss H. A. Yates; senior reserve. Mrs J. Shearer; juniors, Mrs T. Southam; second grade. Mrs L Webb; third grade, Mrs N. Read fourth grade, Mrs E. Hendren fifth grade, Miss H. Legge. Because of the need for com pletion of representative fixtures prior to the running of the New Zealand tournament, it was decided that selection of representative teams must be finalised before June 26.
